SwipID

What is it?

The SwipID is a new concept in the Netherlands. Since previous January the age of alcoholic drinks went up from 16 till 18. A lot of bars weren’t always able to check the ages of their visitors, so a lot of them get high fines. To contravene drinking with minimal ages and decrease the high fines, the organization of the VBA events and the hotel and catering industry of Eindhoven decided to bring out the SwipID. It is a strap which can be scanned at the door of the bars. When the carrier of the strap is 18 years or older, there will appear a green light for the porter or the bartender when the club doesn’t have a porter.

Everyone is able to get one of these SwipID’s. You can go to website and create your own account and then the strip will be connected to your personal profile. The strap will be sent for only 3, 50 euro.

Why is it cool?

The SwipID actually is a very cool concept because of its cleverness and fast way of working. Porters don’t have to check all those ID-cards anymore, they just can see it when something is wrong as soon as the lights do not turn into green. It’s like a gate on the airport, very useful and quick!

How does it have growth potential?

To be honest I think the SwipID maybe has to be a requirement to wear when you’ll come into the bar. Otherwise people under the 18 may won’t wear them and still try to get it with a false ID. Then the concept wouldn’t work, so they really must force it to wear, then the concept will really succeeds. For now the SwipID is only active at 30 different cafes in Eindhoven, but I think when the concept succeeds, it will be imported in the whole country and maybe even more very soon.
